Celebrate Your Husband This Father’s Day

Forget about ties, video cameras, and BBQ supplies. In fact, forget about material items altogether. This Father’s Day, honor the father of your children for the unique individual that he is. Read on for two gift ideas that will hopefully knock his socks off, in one way or another.

Gift #1 - Give him what he really wants.

What does he really want for Father’s Day? Ask him! Pleasing your man is as individual as he is. You’ll have to play detective to find out what will put him over the moon, especially if you want to surprise him. Try the following subtle yet direct approach as far in advance of Father’s Day as possible to avoid arousing his suspicions. When the two of you are relaxed and have a moment to yourselves (in bed can be a good time), casually say, “Honey, if tomorrow was the last day of your life, what would you want to do, from start to finish?

Don’t let him get away with answers like, “Oh, I don’t know” or “Spend the day with you.” Get the specifics, down to the last detail. This is such a fun question that hopefully he won’t have too much trouble answering. Give him time to think if he needs it, offer suggestions – whatever it takes to get him to imagine his perfect dayno restrictions and no judgments. Remember that the emphasis here is on doing. Indeed, a psychological study conducted at San Francisco State University suggests that given the option, positive lived experiences make people happier than purchasing material objects. While the rush of buying a new gadget or a pair of shoes fades over time, psychologists explain, fond memories of an experience can last an entire lifetime. So, post-pone the shopping trip and start making some memories. Dad (and his wallet) will surely appreciate it.

Next, get creative about gifting him with his one perfect day, acknowledging the realities of time, money, and other limiting factors. If what your man wants involves you and the kids, for example, you might be able to swing it on Father’s Day. If it involves just the two of you, you might want to mark out the Saturday before Father’s Day on the calendar and, if necessary, arrange for a sitter. If it involves friends and extended family, consider throwing a surprise gathering on or around Father’s Day.

What if he wants to go skydiving? Find the nearest skydiving company and set up a dive. What if he wants to spend the day at the ball park? Grab some tickets for his favorite local team. And what if he wants to fly to Rome? For some, arranging this won’t be a problem; the rest of us will need to get creative to make this wish come true. See about making reservations for a night at an Italian restaurant, purchase some Italian music and/or DVDs, and think about setting some money aside each month to make the actual trip happen. Life is now, after all.

The idea is to make your husband’s dreams come true. What better way to show your love and make him feel special on Father’s Day? Okay, there may be other ways…and here’s one of them:

Gift #2Give him what he really wants (adults-only version).
